My boy’s were one month old on their first Thanksgiving. If you’re anything like I was with one month old twins, you don’t have time to think, let alone go above and beyond to make their first Thanksgiving special. However, there are some easy ways to make your baby’s first Thanksgiving fun and memorable. Here’s how.

Turkey Hand Prints

Take some non-toxic paint, dab it on your baby’s hand, stick it on a piece of paper and doodle on some eyes, a beak and a top hat. Be sure to write “[Insert child’s name] 1st Thanksgiving” in cute cursive somewhere on the paper. This can go a long way if you make copies and send them out to family members. Be sure to keep the original.

Baby Photo Shoot

This one is slightly more involved but can also be really easy. Either buy an outfit, make an outfit, or dress baby in fall colored clothes that you already own. For the backdrop, gather leaves, branches, pinecones, pumpkins, orange and brown pillows or blankets and get creative. The easiest option, in my opinion, is to dress baby in fall colored clothes they already own, and to prop them onto blankets and pillows. There are really easy ways to print photos these days, including sending them to apps and having them delivered to your house, which I highly recommend.

First Turkey Meal

Make your baby a memorable meal (for you anyway). Here’s an easy guide to pureeing baby food. When they’re older, you can joke about how sour their face turned when they tasted the tart cranberry sauce and how they wouldn’t stop whining until you gave them a second piece of pumpkin pie. If they’re too young to be eating regular foods (like mine were), savor this idea for next year.

Thanksgiving Story

Baby and children’s books are a great investment. I read books to my boys that I read when I was as a child, and I hope they’ll read to their kids. One of my favorite Thanksgiving children’s book is “The Thanksgiving Story” by Alice Dalgliesh. I wrote in that book why I’m thankful for my boys, as well as the year, and it’s become one of my favorite memorable Thanksgiving tokens. Books are timeless, useful and memorable. This may be your next family tradition.
